Principal's Welcome

Tēnā koutou katoa, Kia orana, Talofa lava, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Malo e lelei, Talofa ni and Welcome to Porirua College for 2017! PC is a vibrant, modern school which is home to over 500 Porirua students.

We are a state, co-educational college, established in 1968, for Year 9 to Year 13/14. As the new principal, it has been a real pleasure to join the students and staff in this inclusive, multicultural community. Together, we learn to:

Be Responsible - Manaakitanga

We have a beautiful, modern learning environment looking out over the Porirua basin. Classrooms are clustered around central learning spaces in our four learning houses: Kenepuru, Rangituhi, Tangare and Whitireia. Students join one house for their time at college, where they learn to take care of our environment, connect with our community, give back to others and manage their learning responsibly.

Build Positive Relationships - Whanaungatanga

We are a Positive Behavior for Learning (PB4L) school with a proud history of commitment to restorative practice. We work together with students through our learning coach system to develop positive relationships and solve problems collaboratively. Our 2017 ERO report identified, “pastoral care networks that support and promote student wellbeing.”

Become Powerful Learners - Tū Motuhake

Porirua College students stay at school to gain steadily rising academic results. Our committed staff work closely with students to track and improve their learning, based on goal setting with families at the start of the year. Students have opportunities to attend outside courses whilst at school and most of them progress to further education when they leave the college.

This is a time of change and improvement for Porirua College. In 2016 we began ongoing consultation with our community about how we grow our young people to achieve their dreams. We are currently reviewing our curriculum and pastoral areas to make some exciting changes for 2018, our 50th anniversary year. The 2017 ERO report commented positively on, "a board of trustees that gives priority to student learning, wellbeing and achievement... [and] leaders who are improvement-focused." Please get in touch if you have any questions, or just come up and visit us!

Warm regards,
